Gender, Sexuality, & Family Inequality in East Asia

Our understanding of gender, sexuality, and stratification has almost always come from Western societies. Adopting a multicultural lens, Song examines social contexts that differ substantially from postindustrial democracies.East Asian societies provide an interesting case where traditionally gendered and familial institutions persist amid rapid modernization and rising inequality. For example, he studies post-reform authoritarian China, where Confucianism, hetero-patriarchy, Westernization, and socialism collied (including legacy institutions such as the hukou system and the one-child policy).

Building on his U.S.-based LGBTQ+ research in the first and second line of work, Song has expanded this line of work to the study of Social Attitudes on LGBTQ+ Issues in East Asia, where legal protections for sexual and gender minority populations remain scarce. This is made possible by ongoing cross-national data collections, such as the World Values Survey (WVS) and The International Social Survey Programme (ISSP).
